Day Tripper with Josie Koler

brunch of burgers and ice cream at Charlie’s

The Catholic schools let our early (before the Memorial Day Holiday) which means summer’s on at our place. The family’s nine-year old turned her latest yoga tour and dinner of chicken broccoli fettucine alfredo into a slumber party with her matching brunette puppy following with a patio brunch at one of her favorite haunts.

The two are so cute no one around can stand the sight of the pair on a mission to explore, adventure and take in all life has to offer from the Coastal Ohio Trail, Lake Erie Islands and down to the Gulf Coast of Florida, across Alligator Alley and down into the Florida Keys. (Bosco, (the chocolate lab) has yet to vacation there. He does not enjoy heat and humidity and we have struggled trying to purchase a plane ticket for the four-legged family member).

Outfit in her Chuck Taylor Limited Edition high tops and new Barbie Lemon Graphic Sweatshirt – Pink (on clearance now for a mere twelve dollars at Target) my sidekick rolled up and after viewing the menu had me place an order for — you guessed correctly — a ten piece chicken chunks and curly fries with ketchup; and, a scoop of strawberry ice cream to pick up once the meal is eaten.

My mom and dad raised me to not eat until about 2 pm when famished so I settled on a burger for brunch/breakfast wrapped in lettuce.

We are at the height of Spring 2024 on Ohio’s north coast and nothing screams “season” quite the same as patio tables and sharing curly fries with the family’s chocolate bar.

The strawberry ice cream counteracts the chocolate hair and fur nicely. Order online here.

Charlie’s Homemade Ice Cream and Hamburgers has been a tradition for forty years up on the corner of McCord and Sylvania Avenue in Sylvania, Ohio. A quick bite here will remind diners of simpler times.

A fashion note: Skylar’s Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag is the ultimate summer accessory item to stash cash, a credit card, keys, garage door opener, lip balm and iPhones. She’s rocking one in Glaze Pink. I tried on for a photo op hoping the trend takes twenty years off of my appearance. I do believe the color has a Jem and the Holograms effect.

We spent twenty seven dollars on food, including a lemonade and lemonade to go. Zero dollars went to gas since we were walking. My walking shoes, the Women’s Nike Air Max Bella TR 3 in Mauve Roche, were given to me by the fine folks at Dillard’s. A brand the luxury goods behemoth isn’t dealing online at the moment. They can be found on Ebay “NEW in Box”. We walked across the street to play on the swings and checked out the pool scene at the local YMCA. Memberships can be purchased here.

Josie performed the Day Tripper series “Day Tripper with Josie Koler” partnered with Big Brothers Big Sister of Siouxland while the morning anchor at KMEG back in the early 2000s. She was led by the legend, the late Tedd O’Connell, a news anchor prior to the onset of cable television. The Day Tripper is a terrific summertime series loaded with exactly that. Adventurers to take for the day. This particular piece contains an element for fashion.

To voyage to Middle Bass Island we need to remind everyone private boats, planes, the Miller Boatline, and Sonny-S Boatline are ways to access the island paradise.

The St. Hazards Shuttle Bus is available for everyone on the island once one reaches MBI. The cost is three dollars per person, per way.

Bookings can always be done online at sthazards.com. Tent camping is being offered at an all-time low price of just twenty dollars per tent for a two-night stay. This way St. Hazards can accommodate anyone wanting to join in the festivities. Remember all gear must be brought across the lake.

This is a splendid way to usher in and celebrate Summer 2024 on the Lake Erie Islands. The blenders will all be on, we’re growing mint to muddle fresh Mojitos, have two bars stocked with Caribbean rums and there will be plenty of other libations being served along with a Caribbean-style menu.

Call 419-285-6121 to speak with one the members of our staff, for reservations, tickets and travel tips.

Josie is an award-winning television journalist and at one point the youngest, solo female anchor and producer of the evening news in the nation. She left to report from the ocean as a SCUBA Dive Reporter while writing her own weekly newspaper in Key West. There she covered the Key West Songwriter’s Festival, Parrotheads in Paradise, and started a blog which turned into a TV Show. Another business was born at the start of Little Palm Island‘s Sandbar Sessions. A grand piano was dropped on the sand to accommodate the sounds of Stevie Nicks and JK PR came to be.

The Old Party Shop

The Old Party Shop

now saturnalia for the health smart

One could smell and easily detect the ambiance of the old digs upon arrival. Uptown Amherst was home to “Amherst Party Shop & Video,” a carryall that catered to the town’s revelry and endless entertainment with store shelves stocked with beer, wine, liquor and every accessory to accommodate the occasion.
Everything’s now posh and new.
Everything’s now organic, fresh and wonderfully good for you.

A coffee, tea and smoothie bar has replaced the cigarettes, Teto’s and Sam Adam’s.

I stumbled upon the updates through the MindBody App. The Studio at Doc Watson’s is the new yoga loft above Doc Watson’s (Indoor Farmer’s) Market.
I twisted myself into Cat Pulling its Tail pose and headed downstairs for more deliciousness.

Here’s a look at the menu.

I ordered the Loaded Avo Toast.

Avocado smeared on sprouted grain bread with broccoli sprouts, feta cheese, Himalayan pink salt and everything but the bagel seasoning.
Post yoga deliciousness served with a smile by owner, Kelsey Watson.
I shopped the shelves and saw clean, sugar and caffeine free supplements; a big deal when the issue is heart health.
Bovine Collagen for restorative health has replaced the Bailey’s Irish Cream.

I grew up a kid in Amherst in the 80s. The bedroom community of twenty-five thousand residents was developed then with every amenity a youngster could want. The atmosphere was made alive with an uptown bowling alley, movie theatre, a Ben Franklin’s, library, public pool, sledding hills plus shopping.

I’m thrilled, during visits back to the 44001 homeland, the digs in 2023 a still fit the asterial ambiance of the Amherst Comets.

Fresh Skin for Fall

As soon as Labor Day Weekend wrapped up I declared: I need a facial.

With that in universe my colleague, aesthetician and former Chanel beauty rep extraordinaire messaged me to please come in and see her.

Former Chanel artist and aesthetician Aida Deeb (left) and colleague Cathy Oswald with Anders Dermatology

Her new digs, Anders Dermatology on Holland Sylvania Road in Northwest Ohio.

She signed me up for a Dermaplaning, a procedure that removes the top layers of skin and reduces the look of fine lines. A tiny scalpel is used to tenderly scrape the skin for an exfoliating treatment.

Only — I truly do not have dead skin cells. After a series of Microdermabrasions from the owner of Westshore Skin & Health in Westlake, and application of Gabriel Correctives Exfoliating Gycolic Gel, souls living where the sun barely shines couldn’t tell I had spent so much time at sea.

Lynn Dellapasta owns a home in Old Town Key West and is trained on exactly what to do to skin stressed from the tropics.

My skin had been slugged like an Atlantic side beach on Matecumbe Key after Hurricane Irma.

For the past two and a half years I’ve been drenching my skin with the world’s number one selling serum Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair. But, with the amount of sunscreen from this summer’s outdoor activities I am sure some pores were no longer perfect.

You can reach Aida, my favorite Northwest Ohio Aesthetician at 419-215-7904 or call the office 419-473-3257.

Let the Sun Worship You

Summer Luvin’ No. 6

Photos Steven Drescher

I never thought I would cross this threshold: wear makeup to the beach. Formerly, for forty-plus years strong, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and lip balm we’re the only components to my midsummer kit and kaboodle. This cosmetics conversation piece, coveted by women of every age and ethnicity, is for the cabana days, pool days, yachting and sailing adventures where the world’s lakes and oceans are the backdrop.

For Summer 2019 Anastasia Beverly Hills released the fourteen color, forty-five dollar RIVIERA Eyeshadow Palette.

The nautical stripes and embossed, gold lettering foreshadow, the shadows inside.

This lux beauty score straight out of swankey Southern California speaks to my soul. The shadows are affectionately named:

  • Yacht
  • Seychelles
  • Palmero
  • Seaside
  • Inheritance
  • Monte Carlo

Travel from the Estate to the Bahamas in shades reflective of the world’s most desirable waterfront vacation destinations. The creators urge artists, those with a wanderlust, and all color enthusiasts to:

“Set sail with 14 all-new paradise-inspired mattes and metallics, from vibrant jewel tones to bright pops of color”

Don’t mind if I do.

Summer Luvin’ No. 7

There aren’t many other pieces of gear that scream “a new season is here” (for a man or a woman) than a new pair of Nikeys.

I slid on an ultra, lightweight pair of Women’s Free TR 8 Training Shoes to take on Summer 2019.

All whites offset the heat. Toss on a ballcap or visor to block out the sun no matter the location of the workout and celebrate. Health is wealth.

Brow Drama

The only day to day drama is the brows. Anytime I open up the package to a new Estee Lauder DARK BRUNETTE Brow Multi-Tasker the moment is similar to Christmas morning at about age eight.

This beauty gadget takes brow art to a new level for women of all ages and all ethnicities — minus the added tools. One end consists of a definer, powder element that springs open in the middle and a spoolie brush on the other end.

“Wow,” exclaimed makeup artist Kyle Ricker when I sat down to let him work his wonder.

When I work with this at home or at work, or in the field I simply flip the instrument around like a baton in my hand until I have the results I need. I tell everyone to practice before they make dinner, or after, and dinner dishes are being put away. This way there is time for error when learning how to use AND… the face is going to be washed anyway before bed. Listen to this — I don’t want to wash the Brow Multi -Tasker off! The va-va-voom feeling is captured with this little creation. Comes in eight shades and sells for under thirty dollars.

By the way… in life (or at least mine) “drama” doesn’t exist. Only the conscious level at which individuals choose to show up in self-awareness.

Killer Kimono

Ladies love luxury loungewear.

Silk, satin, and spandex are materials designed to relax and recharge in because of the soft composition.

I own one pair of sweatpants. The kind all blogs warn against, the frumpy, old school kind with a drawstring tie at the top and elastic bands at the ankles.

They read “Guard” down the side in white atop of old red fabric.

Though vintage fashion at this juncture, unfit for consumption.

Even though a North Coast Winter was settling in and the Dillard’s loungewear department is loaded with the brand new Ugg Robes, blankets, socks, loungewear and leggings; my soul lies somewhere and anywhere South of Palm Beach.

I went straight for the skily, smooth texture and delicious feel of spandex and choose several of the kimonos by In Bloom by Jonquil.

I wear this one all of the time and was drawn to the black and white design so sleek for time in the city.

The sophisticated layout of the pattern puts me into work mode and the breathability of the fabric is on point for those ten to thirty minutes any woman spends with her hairdryer.
